Home cooking ... seriously! Great for breakfast .... they open at 530am and close at 2pm. We were greeted like family - at least, like family that sees each other often. "Hi, have a seat, can I get you something" The food was yummy ... the rye bread was the amazing German dark rye. Decor is kitschy and cute. It is a small town diner and it looks and feels like one. The person working the counter and serving people (owner?) was super nice and sat down with us when we had questions about the town. She was very nice, very helpful!

On the way through town my husband and I were wanting the small town greasy spoon food for lunch. Based on the other reviews we decided to try the Ulmer Cafe and it did not disappoint. The burgers were tasty and flavorful. I had the tator tots and they were fried to perfection. They do close at 2:00 so be sure to stop in for lunch. The prices were reasonable and the portions were generous.

I've been coming here for years with my parents. Great home made soups and various dishes with sauerkraut are always good. 1919 root beer on tap!

A little local awareness goes a long way. New Ulm prides itself on its German heritage, and the special at the Ulmer today was Chicken Spaetzle soup with whatever sandwich you want for six bucks. As expected, the spaetzle soup was excellent. Sandwich was ok. Coffee was at least a little stronger than you'd find in a church basement. Service was friendly, restaurant and washrooms were clean, and it was pretty cheap. I'm alright with the Ulmer, and I'd stop in again for lunch. There's a Perkins in town if you prefer a homogenized diner experience.

Had breakfast there and it was as expected. It is a small town cafe. One might call it a greasy spoon, I would consider it a compliment. I had the eggs, bacon, hash browns and pancakes. I didn't come close to finishing the pancakes, but they were good. I loved the hash browns. They had that cardiac feel to them. I will eat there again the next time I am in town.

Typical greasy spoon. Keeping American cheese, Jimmy Dean, and concentrated coffee in business.
